Following Aftab Sultan’s resignation from the position on Tuesday, it was revealed on Saturday that Zahir Shah had been named as the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) acting chairman.
Shah has been appointed to the position as of February 22 “in pursuance of the proviso to Section 6b(v)” (chairman National Accountability Bureau) of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999, according to a notification released by the bureau on Friday. Shah’s appointment follows Aftab Sultan’s abrupt resignation as NAB chairman after just seven months in charge of the organization charged with battling corruption. Sultan gave “interference” and “pressure” as his reasons for leaving, but he didn’t say who was exerting the pressure. These comments were seized upon by the main opposition PTI as proof that he was being forced to file corruption references against their chief Imran Khan.
