In a major step towards providing Pakistan with clean, green, and reasonably priced hydel power, the World Bank (WB) has authorised an additional US $1 billion in funding for WAPDA’s Dasu Hydropower Project, which is being built on the River Indus.
This was the biggest loan the World Bank had ever given for a project in Pakistan. Concessional financing via the World Bank’s IDA and IBRD arms makes up this facility. According to a WAPDA spokeswoman here on Tuesday, the World Bank gave its approval to this effect during its meeting.
This new funding from the World Bank shows how much the Bank values WAPDA’s sound financial standing and industry knowledge for the execution of large-scale projects in the hydropower and water sectors.
