Asserting the two nations’ “shared interests,” the United States will work with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a State Department spokesperson stated on Monday, stressing Washington’s attachment to Pakistan. In response to a query regarding PM Sharif’s appointment to Pakistan’s top position, Spokesperson Mathew Miller stated, “We have said before, we value our alliance — long standing partnership — with Pakistan and have always viewed a strong, prosperous, and democratic Pakistan is critical to United States-Pakistan interests.” He said at his regular news briefing, “And our engagement with new prime minister Shehbaz Sharif and his government will continue to focus on advancing the shared interests.” Meanwhile, the election of Maryam Nawaz, the country’s first female chief minister, was hailed by the US on Monday as a “milestone in Pakistani politics.”
