Spain would recognise a Palestinian state, comprising the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, unified under the Palestinian National Authority with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s announcement on Tuesday.
He declared in a broadcast speech that unless all parties concur, it will not acknowledge any alterations made to the Palestinian borders after 1967.
Later on Tuesday, the recognition will be formally approved by the Spanish government.
According to Prime Minister Sanchez, Palestine’s recognition is a historic development. He continued, “The persecution that the Palestinian people are experiencing is unprecedented.”
“We have not chosen to side with any nation. It is our collective responsibility to establish peace,” he said.
The prime minister declared that the choice was in line with UN resolutions.
