Justice Mansoor Ali Shah said on Monday that the issue of jurisdiction would now “arise every day” in the Supreme Court (SC) after legislation on constitutional benches, following the ratification of the 26th Amendment.
The eagerly anticipated 26th Constitutional Amendment was approved by both houses of Parliament and signed into law in the early hours of Monday. President Asif Ali Zardari subsequently gave his assent.
The majority of the constitutional amendments brought about by the 26th Amendment deal with the judiciary. The removal of the Supreme Court’s suo motu powers, a three-year term limit for the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP), and the ability for the prime minister to select the next CJP from among the top three SC judges are some of the major reforms.
