In a significant move, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) declared on Sunday that it would abstain from voting in the Senate and National Assembly over “controversial and non-transparent” constitutional amendments that the ruling coalition would present to parliament today.
“There is no democratic, moral, or constitutional basis for the group controlling the [lower and upper] Houses to amend the Constitution. According to the statement released by the political committee of the former ruling party, “using constitutional amendments to enforce the law of the jungle is equivalent to burying the democracy [for good].”
The decision by the Imran Khan-founded party coincides with the federal cabinet’s next meeting, scheduled for 2:30 pm, to examine and adopt the final draft of the controversial 26th constitutional amendment.
