Sources told reporters on Thursday that President Asif Zardari has approved the Elections Act (Amendment Bill) 2024, which seeks to prevent independent MPs from switching parties.
According to the sources, the bill has now been forwarded to the Senate Secretariat for today’s gazette announcement.
The bill, which contains retroactive changes to the Elections Act of 2017, was challenged in the Supreme Court by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and was ratified the day after.
In the meantime, the ruling coalition and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) have also petitioned the supreme court to overturn its July 12 order regarding the PTI’s allocation of reserved seats in the National Assembly, a case that coincides with the passage of the previously stated bill.
