According to a statement from the PM’s office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif encouraged the international community on Tuesday to acknowledge the “burden of Afghan refugees” that Pakistan is bearing and to show “collective responsibility” in resolving the situation.
He made these comments at the Prime Minister’s House during a meeting with Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
On Sunday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) began a three-day visit to Pakistan. This is the UNHCR’s first trip to the country since November of last year, when the caretaker government announced a plan to repatriate “undocumented aliens.”
“The prime minister emphasised that the international community needs to show collective responsibility and acknowledge the burden that Pakistan is bearing in hosting such a large number of refugees.”
