The UN operations have been essential in preserving peace and safeguarding civilians in crisis areas, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a tribute to their contributions on Wednesday, the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
Over two million military and civilian personnel have reportedly assisted nations in ending hostilities since 1948, according to the UN. Presently, about 70,000 peacekeepers are stationed in 11 missions situated in global hotspots.
In addition to commemorating the sacrifice and service rendered by peacekeepers, the Day pays honour to the over 4,000 peacekeepers who have sacrificed their lives defending peace.
Special thanks were given by Prime Minister Shehbaz to the Pakistani peacekeepers for their noteworthy achievements.
