Attaullah Tarar, the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, has reaffirmed that the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) aims to combat social media damage and eradicate bogus news.
He underlined that social media cannot be allowed to operate uncontrolled under the pretense of journalism while speaking as the principal guest at the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) Union’s oath-taking ceremony. He said that internet dangers to national security, economic instability, harassment, child abuse content, fake news, and personal defamation were causing social discontent.
Tarar announced the creation of a Digital Media Protection Authority, which will comprise representatives from the press clubs, journalist associations, and the corporate sector, to oversee digital platforms. Its tribunal would also include journalists and IT specialists.
