On Monday, Pakistan and Iran decided that by January 26, 2024, their respective ambassadors would return to their positions. In a phone call, Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian came to this understanding. In addition to informing the Iranian side that their envoy might not be returning for the time being, Pakistan stated on January 16 that it was recalling its ambassador from Tehran in response to Iran’s violation of its airspace. A joint press release from the Foreign Office stated, “It has been mutually agreed that ambassadors of both countries may return to their respective posts by 26 January 2024, following the telephone conversation between Foreign Ministers of Pakistan and Islamic Republic of Iran.”
