Islamabad: The military trials of civilians detained following violent protests in the nation on May 9 were ruled void by a five-member Supreme Court (SC) bench on Monday. A few hours after the case was reserved, the court declared its decision. The bench that included Justices Munib Akhtar, Yayha Afridi, Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, and Ayesha A. Malik was led by Justice Ijazul Ahsan. The court declared in a 4-1 majority decision that the May 9 suspects’ trial would take place in regular tribunals. Justice Afridi had expressed disapproval of the majority decision.

Imran Khan, the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PT), and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the vice chairman, were indicted on Monday by a special court established to consider the cypher case filed under the Official Secrets Act. Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain of the special court heard the case at the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi. ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa bemoaned the petitioners’ lack of preparation on Monday, stating that it was “not possible” to hold elections within the allotted 90 days. As the petitions for prompt elections within 90 days of the legislatures’ dissolution were being heard, the CJP passed the observation. On the case, the CJP is in charge of a three-person bench that also includes Justices Athar Minallah and Amin-Ud-Din Khan. To guarantee that the nation’s elections are held within the allotted time, the Supreme Court Bar Association, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and other parties submitted the pleas.

Medals were awarded to recipients of excellence at the first-ever “Master Convocation Ceremony,” which was presided over by General Syed Asim Munir, COAS and Chairman of the NUST Board of Governors. In his speech, the COAS wished the graduates, their parents, and the faculty the very best. He praised NUST for creating a teaching and learning environment that fosters creative minds and prepares them to serve the country. The head of the army stressed that education was essential and not a choice. He emphasised that the start of a new chapter in the lives of the kids was a big shift that required more accountability. He underlined that their choices and personalities should reflect this newfound responsibility as they embark on their path. Rector NUST received the COAS earlier upon arrival.
