The calendar for the general elections in 2023 will be released in a few days, according to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja. The general election preparations are now under way. The CEC stated in a statement in honour of National Voters Day that the Election Commission is fully aware of its legal and constitutional obligations. “Completely ready and dedicated to hold free and fair elections,” he continued. He claimed that the printing and distribution of electoral rolls had been finished, and the organisation in charge of organising the polls is now busily preparing for the election. A notification regarding the employment of election personnel, such as returning officers (Ros) and district returning officers (DROs), will be sent out in a few days, according to CEC Raja.
The leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, filed an appeal against his conviction in the Al-Azizia reference, and the Islamabad High Court (IHC) agreed to consider it on merits on Thursday. The former premier’s appeal was heard by a division bench that included Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb and Chief Justice Aamir Farooq. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) pleaded with the IHC to remit the appeal back to the accountability court during the case hearing. The bench, however, declined the NAB’s appeal and instead to consider the case on its merits. The leader of the PML-N entered the courtroom accompanied by his legal staff. In the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference, the accountability court fined the former prime minister 2.5 million pounds and sentenced him to seven years in prison on December 24, 2018.

In a report on food insecurity in the Gaza Strip, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) notes that households in northern Gaza are “experiencing alarming levels of hunger.” Nine out of ten Palestinians in northern Gaza go without food for a full day or night, and at least 97% of homes have “inadequate food consumption.” Thirty percent of the households in the southern governorates reported high levels of severe or very severe hunger, while fifty-three percent reported moderate hunger. 1,249 trucks delivering food supplies have arrived in Gaza since October 7. Approximately 500 trucks every day would enter the Gaza Strip prior to the war. According to WFP, 100 food-laden trucks would need to pass through Gaza in order to deliver food aid to the impacted people.
The general elections, which are set for February 8, 2024, should not raise any concerns for the nation, said Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar. “I’m positive about it… These issues are frequently linked to our political structure. We have a history of our own,” he said in a Wednesday interview with Independent Urdu. The prime minister expressed optimism for a free and fair electoral process. He noted that because so many people had differing views about such surveys, he did not use the general elections of the 1970s as a benchmark either. “They were pretty transparent, of course. I think it’s a problem since, at that time, it was already decided before elections which direction they would follow. He expressed hope that the caretaker government would be able to deliver outcomes in a somewhat better manner now that the procedures were in place. The prime minister declared that he agreed with the Election Commission when it denied that there was a poll delay. “The elections must be conducted by them (the Election Commission).” We’re on their side. According to the Election Commission, he added, the election timetable would take place across 56 days, and by December 14th, the schedule should be made public. When questioned about the idea that Imran Khan’s loss of support ...
Punjab’s Chief Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, gave a key speech at the 28th annual (COP-28) climate change conference in Dubai, where he discussed the government’s initiatives to combat smog and environmental problems in Pakistan, particularly in Punjab. Mohsin Naqvi made a convincing and thorough case regarding Pakistan’s haze, particularly in Punjab. In his speech, the Chief Minister blamed India for the haze that plagues Pakistan, particularly in Punjab. Addressing a session in the Pakistan pavilion during the international forum (COP-28), Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi emphasised that the international community should put pressure on India to address the hazardous smog problem, adding that discussions should be held to find a solution. The Indian Punjab’s widespread crop burning has caused haze, which has had a negative impact on Pakistan’s Punjab. CM stated that efforts to address climate change must be coordinated worldwide since it is a problem that affects everyone, regardless of national borders. Pakistan and India are both suffering from the unfavourable conditions brought on by the haze. India and Pakistan must work together to end the pollution. CM Mohsin Naqvi underlined that appropriate action must be taken immediately to address the smog issue. Everyone has a shared obligation to address the issue of climate change. Working together will be necessary for a better future.
Pakistan urged Indian government on Wednesday to guarantee minorities’ safety, security, and protection—especially Muslims and their houses of worship. In a statement released on the thirty-first anniversary of the famous Babri Mosque’s demolition, the Foreign Office described the day as a sombre reminder of how a group of Hindu fanatics destroyed the centuries-old mosque in Ayodhya in plain front of Indian law enforcement. The FO statement read, “It is regrettable that India’s superior judiciary not only cleared the perpetrators of this hateful act but also approved the construction of a temple on the site of the demolished Mosque.”
This week, three projects totaling $658.8 million were approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to assist Pakistan in realising its objective of more equitable and sustainable growth and development. As of December 1, power-related enterprises’ officers of Grade 17 and higher will no longer receive free electricity units from the federal government, according to a study released on Wednesday. Instead, these officials’ wages will now be their only source of financial gain. On October 26, 2023, the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) reached the decision, which the federal cabinet then ratified. On Tuesday, the Energy Ministry’s Power Division formally announced the resolution’s implementation. “Monetisation of Free Electricity Units Admissible to Employees of WAPDA and XWAPDA Companies (DISCOs), (GENCOs), (NTDC), and Power Information Technology Company (PITC)” is the name of the initiative that requires all in-service workers in Grades 17 and above to pay the electricity bills that are issued by the corresponding DISCOs.
