A day after Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi resigned, Supreme Court Justice Ijazul Ahsan shockingly announced his resignation on Thursday. Following Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Ahsan was supposed to be the next Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP). “I no longer wish to continue as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan,” Justice Ahsan stated in his letter of resignation to the president. According to Article 206(1) of the Constitution, he declared he was resigning with immediate effect. The resignation’s reason was not stated in the letter. Justice Naqvi, who is being accused of misconduct, submitted his resignation as a Supreme Court judge a day ago, and President Arif Alvi accepted it earlier today.
Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the prime minister, stated on Thursday that the KP police, who were battling the terrorists with courage and valour, were much appreciated by the entire country. Murtaza Solangi, the federal minister for information, broadcasting, and parliamentary affairs, stated on Thursday that the caretaker government was required by the constitution to comply with the Election Commission of Pakistan’s administrative, financial, and security obligations. Speaking to the journalists outside the ECP, he declared that the nation’s elections would take place on Thursday, February 8, 2024, if all goes according to plan. He stated that the ECP was mandated by the constitution to organise free, fair, and transparent elections across the nation. Furthermore, Murtaza Solangi stated that the caretaker administration supported the Election Commission and was legitimate and constitutional. According to the minister, there are legitimate security concerns, which the government is aware of and is working to address.

The ruling of the Peshawar High Court (PHC), which nullified the electoral body’s decision to deem PTI’s intra-party polls “unconstitutional” and remove the party’s recognisable bat electoral symbol, was challenged by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the Supreme Court on Thursday. “It is necessary to declare the Peshawar High Court’s ruling unlawful. In its appeal to the highest court, the ECP said that PTI had not conducted intra-party elections in accordance with the Election Act. The petition was started when ECP convened a meeting to consider the PHC ruling, according to sources. According to the sources, alternatives for appealing the PHC j udgement to the Supreme Court were discussed during the discussion.
