Islamabad: Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), had his conviction overturned by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday. This decision marks a significant step forward for Sharif’s candidature as the nation’s next prime minister. According to his party, the seasoned politician, who returned home in October after a four-year self-imposed exile in London, is considering a fourth term as prime minister. In order for him to be eligible to run in the elections set for February 8, 2024, he must serve a another seven years and be permanently barred from holding any public office. In 2018, Sharif was found guilty of corruption charges related to his inability to provide evidence supporting the monies’ origins.
Following the conclusion of the arguments from the solicitors for the prosecution and defence, the high court rendered its reserved decision. Senior attorney Irfan Qadir told Geo News, “It is unfortunate that a former prime minister is facing such sham cases, then [we can’t imagine] what is happening to a common man,” and he called on the judges who found Nawaz guilty to offer an apology to the country. He said that in light of the contentious Panama ruling, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has received instructions from the Supreme Court to file references against Nawaz. It is important to note that the NAB prosecutor has not presented any proof against the PML-N supremo for possessing assets beyond means, even though the case has been ongoing since 2017.
