The Israeli strike near a hospital in south Beirut last night killed 13 people, including a toddler, according to Lebanon’s health ministry on Tuesday, upping its original death toll of four.
The health ministry reported that a further 57 persons were injured in the strike close to the Rafik Hariri Hospital, Lebanon’s largest public health facility, which lies a few kilometres from the city centre.
According to an AFP correspondent in the region, the strike demolished four buildings nearby and caused minor damage to the facility in the Jnah neighbourhood.
According to the correspondent who heard a cell phone ringing beneath pieces of concrete on Tuesday, rescuers were still looking for lives beneath the debris.
Israel struck the southern suburbs of Beirut on Monday night.
