The election date for the KP Assembly is expected to be announced on March 6 (Monday), according to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Governor Ghulam Ali, when the province’s principal secretary opens the letter the Election Commission on Pakistan (ECP) sent to him.
The governor told reporters on Saturday that his principal secretary received the ECP’s letter last night at 8:00 p.m. The letter will be opened by the Secretary himself when he returns from leaves on Monday .
It is to be noted that on January 14 and January 18, respectively, the Punjab and KP assemblies were dissolved. The constitution mandates that the elections take place 90 days after an assembly is dissolved. As a result of the governors’ refusal to offer a date, the matter was brought before the Supreme Court (SC), which in its ruling ordered President Arif Alvi to announce the date of the Punjab elections after consulting with the ECP and the governor of the Kurram Agency to propose an election date following consultation with the commission.
