Govt pursuing a democratic path vis-a-vis the media: Minister

Marriyum Aurangzeb, Pakistan’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, expressed satisfaction over Pakistan’s seven-point increase in the World Press Freedom Index.

She said in a statement on Friday that this demonstrates how tolerating differences in opinion and shows that we are moving in the right direction with good intentions. She claimed that the Reporters Without Borders report demonstrates that the government is taking a democratic stance toward the media. She claimed that this report clearly illustrates the distinction between an imposed undemocratic government and a democratic one. The Minister of Information claimed that initiatives are under way to rid Pakistan of the label of “Media Predator.”

She pointed out that Imran Khan was declared Media Predator in 2022 and during the last year of that dark reign, the country dropped 12 points on World Press Freedom Index.

During the four year of Imran Khan’s government, Pakistan’s overall ranking fell by eighteen points. The Information Minister said Imran Khan’s four year of mess is gradually being cleared. She said the world is also recognizing that the era where different oppressive tactics were used against the media is gradually coming to an end.

The Information Minister felicitated Pakistani nation and the media over improvement in Pakistan’s ranking in Press Freedom Index. She said it is welcoming that this progress on the media front has been achieved during the one year leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.Marriyum Aurangzeb expressed her gratitude to God Almighty that the country has yet again earned a good name after exit from FATF grey list. Paying glowing tributes to the journalists and their associations who waged a struggle for the freedom of expression and braved all sorts of oppression, the Information Minister said this journey of improvement will be continued with their cooperation and guidance. She expressed the commitment to give further impetus to this constitutional right of freedom of expression and media.
