During a Labour Department performance review meeting, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif granted 1,224 free flats for workers in the labour colonies of Taxila and Sunder.
She also mandated that labourers receive payments totaling Rs 6 billion in death and marriage grants. The previous government withheld these payments from 29,000 workers; today, worthy labourers would receive them.
In order to provide free housing for 704 women workers in Sheikhupura, the Chief Minister ordered the construction of two dormitories for female workers in Garment City. In addition to improvements in the Department of Labour, Occupational Safety and Health, and the execution of minimum wage regulations, Maryam Nawaz evaluated the programmes for workers’ scholarships, the creation of labour colonies, and health facility projects for workers.
