DURING AN UNANNOUNCED VISIT TO THE CAPITAL OF UKRAINE ON MONDAY, US President Joe Biden Announced New Military Aid For Ukraine, Showing Solidarity With Kyiv Days Before The First Anniversary Of Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion Of Ukraine.
While Biden was in Kyiv for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, air raid sirens sounded throughout the Ukrainian capital, but there were no reports of Russian airstrikes or missiles. Biden stated that Washington would support Ukraine for however long it takes. By far, the largest provider of military assistance to help Ukraine fend off better-equipped Russian invaders has been the United States.
Zelenskiy said, “Your visit is a very significant expression of support for all Ukrainians. Biden stated that a new $500 million military aid package from Washington would be announced on Tuesday. More ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, he claimed, would be included. In a speech, Biden praised Ukraine for its bravery during the conflict and mentioned that, during his time as vice president, he had made six trips to Kyiv. He said, “I knew I would be back. Zelenskiy and Biden were inside the St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral, which is located on a square in the heart of Kyiv where burned-out Russian tanks have been positioned, when the air raid sirens began to sound.
Ukraine is getting ready for what it anticipates will be a significant new Russian offensive that, according to some military analysts, is already in progress. Biden’s visit coincided with the anniversary of the Heavenly Hundred, or the more than 100 Ukrainians who died during anti-government demonstrations that led to the 2014 overthrow of a Moscow-backed president.
