Pakistan to establish ‘gem and jewelry city’

A pivotal meeting of the Prime Minister’s Committee on Precious Stones was presided over by Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, opening the door for important advancements in Pakistan’s gemstone sector.

According to a news release on Wednesday, the committee voted to create a Gemstone Export Processing Centre, a Gem and Jewellery City in Islamabad, and an authority for the efficient use of precious stones.

Aleem Khan, the Minister of Privatisation, Jam Kamal, the Minister of Commerce, as well as the appropriate secretaries and DGs, attended the meeting.

A number of suggestions for possible applications of precious stones were made throughout the discussion.

The committee also took into account suggestions for promoting foreign investment in this industry. The establishment of a Gemstone and Jewellery Centre at international airports was also agreed upon.
