Attaullah Tarar, the federal minister of information, broadcasting, national heritage, and culture, declared on Tuesday that those who engage in digital terrorism will face harsh consequences for their use of social media to harass and target journalists.
“Attempts are being made to harm the children of journalists by sharing their families’ details and their addresses,” the minister stated during a press conference on Tuesday.
The minister made it clear that anyone engaging in a campaign against journalists will face harsh punishment from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior.
He claimed that the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has also severely denounced online harassment of journalists and that the malicious campaign’s goal was to hurt journalists and their families. The minister promised that not a single offender would escape punishment for the heinous conduct of threatening and attacking the journalists and their families.
He accused the PTI leadership of abandoning their party workers as they fled D Chowk. “The question of why the PTI leaders fled the Blue Area comes up,” he stated.
Attaullah Tarar stated that the opposition to the call for civil disobedience by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administration and several of its ministers was a commendable step.
