President gives assent to 26th Constitutional Amendment

President Asif Ali Zardari signed the 26th Constitutional Amendment into law on Monday after it was approved by both chambers of Parliament earlier today.
In Pakistani politics, the ruling coalition eventually passed the much-discussed “Constitutional Package” with a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and the National Assembly, marking the second “working weekend” in as many months.
The majority of the constitutional amendments brought about by the 26th Amendment deal with the judiciary. The removal of the Supreme Court’s suo motu powers, a three-year term limit for the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP), and the ability for the prime minister to select the next CJP from among the top three SC judges are some of the major reforms.
