Govt proposes selecting CJP from 3 top SC judges

The government has suggested in its draft for the intended constitutional reforms that Qazi Faez Isa, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), be succeeded by one of the three most senior judges of the Supreme Court, according to media reports on Sunday.
There are rumours that an eight-member parliamentary committee will choose the candidate for the coveted position.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MNA Syed Khursheed Shah leads the special parliamentary committee, which the coalition government has been meeting regularly to discuss the proposed constitutional changes. This is part of the government’s increased efforts to reach an agreement on its contentious “Constitutional Package.”
The administration needs a two-thirds majority in parliament and 13 votes in the National Assembly (NA) in order to approve the constitutional modifications.
