According to Attaullah Tarar, the federal minister of information, broadcasting, national heritage, and culture, the privatisation of DISCOs has begun as part of the current government’s reform program following a change to the State Owned Enterprises Act.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday alongside Mustafa Kamal, the leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the information minister noted that corruption and inefficiencies inside DISCOs have been there for many years. He claimed that as a result, it was determined to appoint qualified and experienced individuals from the private sector to manage the DISCOs independently of politics.
He stated that during their meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a group from MQM Pakistan, which included Mustafa Kamal and Khalid Maqbool, discussed issues pertaining to power tariffs and the IPP.
