SC suspends LHC’s verdict, ECP’s notification in tribunals case

The Lahore High Court’s ruling to create extra election tribunals and the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) April 26 announcement were both suspended by the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday.
The ruling by the top court coincided with the hearing of the ECP’s appeal against the LHC’s ruling from last month, which established eight electoral tribunals to examine election cases pertaining to national and provincial assembly constituencies. The bench consisted of five members.
Judge Amin-ud-Din Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, and Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi made up the bench, which was presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa.
The latest development in the continuing dispute between the ECP and the LHC over the nomination of judges to electoral tribunals pertaining to the polls on February 8 is the ruling rendered by the Supreme Court today.
