Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif clarified on Tuesday that the intended counterterrorism campaign, “Vision Azm-i-Istehkam,” would involve stepping up ongoing intelligence-based operations (IBOs) rather than launching a “new and organised” military offensive in response to harsh criticism from opposition parties.
The clarification follows the announcement made last night by the PM’s Office (PMO) that the campaign, which was formerly known as “Operation Azm-i-Istehkam,” will not involve widespread local population relocation or be a large-scale military action involving kinetic force.
“Azm-i-Istehkam is an overall national vision of a multifaceted, cooperation of various security agencies and the entire state system,” PM Shehbaz was cited in the statement as saying. “In order to achieve this, already ongoing IBOs will be intensified rather than [launching] a new and organised armed operation.”
