Senators grill FBR chief over hike on hybrid, electric cars’ taxes

Asim Ahmad, the chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), came under fire from senators on Thursday over a number of issues, including the increased taxes on electric and hybrid vehicles.
The Senate Standing Committee on Finance voiced concerns about the higher tax rate on electric and hybrid vehicles during a hearing in Islamabad that was presided over by Senator Salim Mandviwala of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
Independent Senator Faisal Vawda stated during the meeting that there is global encouragement for the usage of electric vehicles.
“A sales tax of 25% has been levied on vehicles priced above Rs15 million,” Vawda stated.
According to the senator, issues arise whenever a policy is created and altered. “No one sets up industry in this country because of changes in taxes and policies.”
