The right to self-determination is a fundamental tenet of international law, according to President Dr. Arif Alvi, but sadly, the Kashmiri people have not been allowed to exercise this unalienable right. In a message on February 5, Kashmir Solidarity Day, the president stated, “Every year, the UN General Assembly adopts a resolution expressing unequivocal support for the realisation of the right to self-determination for people under foreign occupation.” He stated that for the previous 76 years, the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) have been fighting to realise their right to self-determination. IIOJK is one among the world’s most militarised zones today. The atmosphere that Kashmiris live in is one of intimidation and terror, the president remarked.
