The Elections Act of 2017 revisions and the Supreme Court’s ruling on lifetime disqualification, according to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, cannot coexist. The Supreme Court held in a historic decision in 2018 that disqualification granted under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution was intended to be “permanent.” The same rule that disqualified former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Panama Papers case also stipulates that a member of parliament must be “sadiq and ameen” (honest and virtuous). In the Toshakhana case earlier this year, Imran Khan was also declared ineligible based on the same article.
