Senior UN authorities declared on Sunday that there can be no excuse for any “acts of war” in or near any healthcare facilities. This was in the midst of reports that Israeli forces, fighting the Palestinian resistance fighters in the beleaguered enclave, had attacked Gaza’s largest hospital. However, the Israeli occupation forces denied having struck Al-Shifa Hospital, claiming it is situated over a Hamas headquarters. The Israeli military acknowledged that fighting is occurring “around” the hospital at the same time. Martin Griffiths, UN special representative for humanitarian affairs, stated that there could be “no justification for acts of war in healthcare facilities leaving them with no power, food or water and shooting at patients and civilians trying to flee” in light of the “horrific reports of attacks”.
