UN terms complete blockade of Gaza against int’l law

The UN human rights commissioner stated that Israel’s complete closure of the Gaza Strip, which deprives populations of necessities  for living, is prohibited by international law amid ongoing attacks on Palestinians. The announcement comes day after Israel completely cut off the Gaza Strip from supplies of electricity, water, food, and fuel and activated record 300,000 reservists, sparking concerns that it was planning ground invasion. Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, urged all parties to defuse the “explosive powder keg situation,” saying that people’s dignity and lives must be respected. “International humanitarian law is clear: the obligation to take constant care to spare the civilian population and civilian objects remains applicable throughout the attacks,” Turk stated in statement.
