ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Mian Javed Latif said on Thursday that the country would not be able to hold elections in the current political, economic, and security environment, so elections in 2023 would probably take place in October.
Speaking to the media, he warned that early elections could cause the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) a number of problems, including unresolved delimitation issues. The ECP could hold free, fair, and transparent elections after compiling data from the census results, he added. In response to a query regarding security at polling places, he stated that the Pakistan Army was unable to station jawans in each location.
He said Pakistan’s Armed forces were fighting the war on terrorism with success. Keeping in view the current situation, he suggested all the political parties including the PTI wait for elections till October.
The government would provide all required funds, security and other essential items to the ECP for conducting transparent elections across Pakistan in October, he said.
