Senior Vice-President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Maryam Nawaz, stated on Tuesday that elections must be held in the nation but that “key decisions” are yet to be made.
On February 27, Maryam made a demand that “injustice” against her father and party leader, Nawaz Sharif, be resolved before the nation’s upcoming elections. Elections will take place after Nawaz Sharif’s conviction for being innocent is overturned, she had stated. Maryam, who is also the party’s chief organizer, addressed her party members in Sheikhupura today and said: “First, there would be accountability, then elections would be held.” She said: “Scale [of justice] will be applied to the “injustices” against the PML-N leader and alleged relief for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan by the courts.
Maryam criticized the PTI leader, saying that while he preached to the country about destroying the “idol of fear” and “shackles of slavery,” Khan hid in his house in Zaman Park. The PML-N leader called Khan “a coward man” and claimed that when General (ret) Qamar Javed Bajwa said goodbye to the army, he demanded a court-martial for Khan. She questioned Khan about the decision to court-martial the former prime minister. She added that although “Innocent” Nawaz had appeared 200 times before the courts, the “fitna” had only made two appearances. She also noted that the PTI leaders had been granted bail in just 48 hours. The leader of the PML-N had said, “I rest my case to Allah,” Maryam recalled.
She also chastised Saqib Nisar, a former chief justice of Pakistan. It is important to note that in a landmark decision on the Panama Papers case in July 2017, a five-member bench of the Supreme Court, presided over by the then-CJP Nisar, had barred Nawaz from holding public office. A day earlier, the former chief justice admitted that his former court’s judgment did not “completely” deem former prime minister Imran Khan to be honest and truthful (Sadiq and Amin).
