WASHINGTON: A group of top US justice officials on Monday accused Google of tracking and taking advantage of users’ location data, despite the fact that users thought they were using the tech company’s services. Can protect privacy.
Google builds detailed profiles and sells highly targeted ads with data collected from its billions of users – an important part of location information, arguing suits that seek to block alleged practices.
Google has assured users that changing their account and device settings will protect their privacy,” said Carl Reisen, the attorney general in Washington.
The suit is the latest legal threat against Google and other US big-tech companies, which have long faced investigations and lawsuits but lack new national laws that will govern their business.
The Attorney General – the state’s top law enforcement and legal adviser – was to sue TechCallus from Indiana, Washington and Texas, making the same allegations.
Google said the authorities’ claims were false and based on old claims about its settings.
“We’ve always built privacy features into our products and provided strong controls for location data,” Google said in a statement. “We will defend ourselves vigorously and set records.”
Resin argued that between 2014 and at least 2019, Google claimed that users could turn off their “location history” setting and that “the places you visit are no longer secure.”
