Chief Justice doing the much needed opposition

Exactly one year go the honorable Chief Justice of Pakistan intervened into matters of administration and it attracted backlash quite a lot. Some interventions have helped government speed up the work on tasks of massive importance. Honorable Chief Justice was concerned about the hospital waste in Punjab and other provinces, he held multiple hearings regarding the issue. Punjab though already had started working on incinerators was asked to speed up and make sure these fatal waste outputs are disposed off immediately.

The contagious material is processed at government setup incinerators and private incinerators in case there are none available in the district. There are several other examples of administrative check which proved beneficial for the general public. Opposition was of the view that they were being unnecessarily targeted to taint their image but as the CJP Saqib Nisar continued to have his say in governance, it clarified judiciary’s position against the allegations.

Mr. CJP’s recent intervention in IGP Islamabad case and shunning Azam Swati’s tribal approach on dealing with ordinary people, is commendable. Mr. CJP must continue dealing with issues of great public influence. A government needs strong opposition to make it work, make it take right decisions, stop it from doing any unfair decision – this role could be played better by the judiciary itself because the real opposition is already busy saving its own skin from the cases of corruption and irregularities.

PML-N that led federal and Punjab during the previous political setup are stuck with NAB and Mr. Zardari is trying his best to disassociate from the ‘Falooda vendor’ account. In such a scenario, government is free to do anything, which is very positive that Imran Khan is facing no unjust interference and is free from any pressure. But that’s how a burden-free government is prone to wrong decisions more than usual. For the final check, CJP’s role is crucial for the country.
